Pompei
Pompei, between history and archeology
A visit to Pompei is not only the visit of an archeological site but and emotional event walking the steps through Ancient History in a city and its daily life of the past so well preserved to date.
The Pompeians were not alarmed by the many signs that occured in the previous weeks: earthquakes, lack of water, fearful collapses, this is beacause Vesuvius did not yet exist, in fact it will form due to the explosion in 79 AD. The Pompeians were repairing the damage caused some time before by an earthquake. But within a few hours the volcano shows itself with all its strenght and the whole coast is devastated.
The rediscovery of Pompei starts from 1700 thanks to archeological research. There are many treasures of Pompei to see, of which the following:
The House of the Faun - this is one of the most important places in the whole park. In fact, these are the remains of an ancient Roman villa that extends for about 3000 square meters. The entire complex dates back to the 2nd century BC, and is known for the discovery of a bronze statue depicting a faun, an ancient Roman god who protected the countryside.
The Pompei amphitheatre - built between 80 and 70 AD, and is one of the best preserved and largest (maximum capacity 0f 20.000 people).
The forum of Pompei - the beating heart of the city. The ancient inhabitants used to go here to access the main buildings of Pompei, overlooking the Forum.
The Garden of the Fugitives: the most heartbreaking testimony of the end of Pompei.
These are just some of the beauties of Pompei that will surely fascinate people of all ages!
